You can find the specialists for substations at Caverion – reliably, with long experience
A critical part of our infrastructure
The national investment programme strengthens the transmission capacity of the transmission grid to meet the needs of increasing electricity consumption and renewable production. At the same time, wind farms, solar parks and data centers are waiting to be accessed, and the electrification of industry is increasing the load on existing stations even faster than they can be modernized.
So Finland needs new substations and modernisation of old substations. When electricity production and distribution work optimally, euros are saved and emissions are reduced. Professional installation and testing ensure that your power transmission and distribution systems and substations operate reliably and at optimal power.
Key figures
Whether you need modernisation of your transmission and distribution system or an entirely new substation, we will carry out the installation from design to commissioning.
We deliver all installation work related to the electricity distribution network, from small additional, modification and new installations to comprehensive substation and switchgear implementations. We are a device-independent operator and we supply both air- and gas-insulated plant types at voltage levels of 1–400 kV.
Network companies
Distribution, regional and main grid substations from planning to commissioning. We implement both new stations and modernization of existing ones without long supply interruptions. As a device-independent supplier, we connect new systems to the old environment.
• New substations as turnkey deliveries
• Replacement of equipment and modernisation of protection systems
• High-voltage cabling up to 110 kV
• Commissioning, testing and relay protection services

Industry
Electricity distribution systems in data centers, factories and mines are designed and built on the terms of production. We carry out minor modifications as well as entire switching plants, and we fit the schedule around downtime.
• Industrial power distribution systems and switchgear
• Ground fault current and reactive power compensation equipment
• Protection and automation modernizations without production interruptions
• Relay testing reliability — Omicron CMC356, Sverker 900, Torkel 840
Wind and solar parks
The connection of production to the main grid requires its own substation. We design and build the parks' own substations and connections — a schedule connected to the park's construction phases.
• Wind parks and solar parks own substations
• Interface stations to the main grid
• Protection systems required for decentralized production
• Design and construction from the same address

Our solution
• Design
• Civil engineering work
• Equipment deliveries
• Installations and related material deliveries
• Standards-compliant inspections
• Testing and commissioning
Why to choose Caverion as a partner
Our expertise extends to all substation protection and remote control systems commonly used in Finland. You will not be locked into the ecosystem of a single manufacturer.
The correct operation of relay protection is the most important single factor for trouble-free electricity distribution. Our digital test equipment (Omicron CMC356, Sverker 900) covers all common relay types.
We master the IEC 61850 standard and the GOOSE-technology it contains. These are prerequisites for the data transfer of modern substations.
A service network covering the whole of Finland means that the project manager and installers are nearby — even after commissioning.
The same partner from design to commissioning. One contract, one responsible party, one timetable.
Our security experts will investigate the functioning of the current system and, if necessary, assist in selecting the appropriate security solution and layouts.

Halsuan ja Ullavan 400 kV sähköasemat (Fingrid)
Kahden uuden 400 kV sähköaseman rakentaminen KVR-urakkana osana Lakeuslinja-voimajohtohanketta Kalajoelta Alajärvelle. Hanke parantaa siirtokapasiteettia ja mahdollistaa tuuli- ja aurinkovoiman lisärakentamisen Pohjanmaalla. Toteutus 2025–2027, käyttöönotto kesällä 2027.
Nebiuksen datakeskuksen sähköasema, Lappeenranta
Sähköaseman suunnittelu ja toteutus yhdelle Euroopan suurimmista tekoälylaskennan datakeskuksista (310 MW kokonaiskapasiteetti). Sopimusarvo noin 15 miljoonaa euroa. Aikataulu poikkeuksellisen nopea: suunnittelu alkoi heti, toteutus heinäkuussa 2026, käyttöönotto keväällä 2027. Ensimmäisen vaiheen teho 70 MW, pinta-ala 7 000 neliötä.
Our latest substation projects
Halsuan ja Ullavan 400 kV substations (Fingrid)
Construction of two new 400 kV substations as turn-key delivery as part of the Lakeuslinja transmission line project from Kalajoki to Alajärvi. The project improves transmission capacity and enables additional construction of wind and solar power in Ostrobothnia. Implementation 2025–2027, commissioning summer 2027.
Åbackan 400 kV substation + Vuolijoki and Pyhäselkä expansion (Fingrid)
New 400 kV substation in Åbacka, Ostrobothnia, and extensions of 400 kV substations in Kajaani Vuolijoki and Muhos Pyhäselkä. The total value of the contracts is EUR 18 million. Åbacka station is part of the Åback-Nokia transmission connection, which enables the transfer of the renewable production on West Coast to Southern Finland. Planning began in 2026, completed in 2028.
Renewal of the Ivalo substation 220/110 kV (Fingrid)
Complete renewal of 220/110 kV substation built in 1987. A new open switching plant will be built next to the current station, the old station will be dismantled. The value of the contract is approximately EUR 15 million. The project strengthens the electricity networks in Lapland and secures the area's electricity supply.
Substation for Nebius data center, Lappeenranta
Design and implementation of a substation for one of Europe's largest AI computing data centers (total capacity of 310 MW). Contract value approximately EUR 15 million. Schedule is exceptionally fast: planning started immediately, implementation in July 2026, commissioning in spring 2027. First stage capacity 70 MW, area of 7,000 square meters.

How long does it take to build a substation?
The schedule depends on the voltage level, permitting, and listing type. Examples of delivery: the 400 kV main grid station took delivery of about 24 months from planning to commissioning. Data center substation on an exceptionally tight schedule for about 9–10 months. Modernizations are typically faster than new construction.
Do you also provide only modernization or partial delivery?
Yes. We also deliver small additional, modification and new installations, equipment upgrades, security modernizations and commissioning services as separate assignments. We have renovated about 50 substations in recent years.
What voltage ranges do you supply?
1–400 kV. This covers the voltage levels of both the distribution network, the regional network and the main grid. We carry out projects related to both 110 kV and 400 kV networks.
Are we tied to a specific equipment manufacturer?
No you're not. We are a device independent operator and supply all protection and remote control systems commonly used in Finland, including solutions based on IEC 61850 -standard.
Can modernization be done without a distribution break?
In most cases, yes — either in phases or with a backup feed. For example, in the renewal of the Ivalo substation, a new open switchgear plant will be built next to the current one, whereby the electricity supply can be secured throughout the project. The method of implementation is planned on a case-by-case basis.
Do you also supply air- and gas-insulated switchgear (AIS / GIS)?
We deliver both. The choice is made based on the space solution, the environment and the costs.
Do you provide maintenance services after commissioning?
Yes. The same team can continue as a lifecycle service in the maintenance and relay testing of the substation.
