The growth of digital infrastructure is accelerating new substation projects in Finland. Caverion Finland has signed an agreement with AI cloud company Nebius for the design and delivery of a substation serving Nebius's new data centre in Mäntsälä, Finland. The contract is worth approximately €15 million. The substation will serve Nebius's second data centre in Mäntsälä, a new 70-megawatt building alongside its existing 75-megawatt site.

The substation is the data centre’s critical connection to the electricity grid
The substation serves as the data centre’s gateway to the electricity grid. It enables electricity supplied at high voltage to be transferred safely, reliably and without interruption for the data centre’s use. This makes the substation one of the most important infrastructure components of the entire data centre.
“We will deliver the substation in Mäntsälä on an exceptionally fast schedule, as is typical for data centre construction: the substation will be completed in autumn 2027. The substation will have a capacity of 70 megawatts. We thank Nebius once again for its trust in our company’s capabilities, the quality of our work and our safe way of operating,” says Kari Aalto, Head of Industrial Projects and Infrastructure at Caverion Finland.
Andrey Blokhin, SVP of Global Infrastructure at Nebius said, "Our capacity expansion in Mäntsälä with the new data center is a key part of developing Nebius's global AI infrastructure footprint. We value Caverion’s experience, delivery reliability, and high-quality and safe implementation approach."
Caverion has strong experience as an implementation partner for the data industry as well as technologically demanding industrial and infrastructure projects. The company has rapidly developed an operating model for substation deliveries that is particularly well suited to the data centre market.
“Above all, the fast lead time is made possible by our own professionals, who have extensive experience in demanding energy and infrastructure projects. Other significant factors include precise phasing of the implementation, a local partner company network, and our company’s proactive procurement and supply chain management. We leverage the lessons learned from our successful substation projects to the fullest, drawing on experience that has been thoroughly documented and analysed in detail,” says Aalto.
Domestic specialist expertise must be secured
During the construction phase of a large data centre, the temporary employment effect can amount to several thousand person-years. The delivery of the future substation alone will employ approximately 80 energy sector professionals and electricians.
Aalto emphasises the importance of ensuring that data centres built in Finland are delivered with domestic labour and in cooperation with domestic companies. This also means training skilled professionals.
“Finnish expertise has convinced international investors and customers in major industrial projects and data infrastructure. In Finland, we are continuously recruiting electricians and other professionals in building technology and industrial maintenance. We are a domestic operator in nearly 50 locations across Finland, and our partner network consists mainly of local Finnish companies. This means jobs, stronger domestic expertise and growth in Finland,” Aalto continues.
Caverion is known in the data and energy infrastructure market as a technical designer, implementer and lifecycle partner for large, technologically advanced industrial and infrastructure projects. The company delivers projects in accordance with very high safety and quality standards.
In Finland alone, the company has participated in ten demanding data centre projects and dozens of other technologically advanced industrial and infrastructure projects requiring an extremely high level of safety, quality and delivery reliability. The most recent public example is the data centre expansion by Caverion and MCF Group Estonia in Estonia, which demonstrates the high quality of Finnish building technology expertise.
Caverion also has significant experience in high-voltage projects. In recent years, the company has delivered approximately 30 new substations in Finland, refurbished around 50 substations, and completed nearly 50 power line projects of varying sizes in both 110 kV and 400 kV networks.
